Charleston, SC

Looking for a trip from Raleigh, that bring years of memories.  How about, Charleston, SC.  The approximate 278 mile trip should take you around four hours and ten minutes driving.  Although the trip can be done in one day, it is a good drive and you may want to spend the night in Charleston.

 

Originally called Charles Town, this is one of America’s founding cities.  In 1670, this city began with an history that would span from the colonial era until today.  The beauty of Charleston, South Carolina is unquestionable.  The East Coast location aided in Charleston’s development as one of the primary ports for entry of slaves in the United States.  If you know an African American, you probably know someone whose ancestors entered this country through Charleston.  Believe it or not, it is estimated that one out of every two African Americans ancestors arrived as slaves in Charleston from Africa. 

 

Have you ever been shaken by an earthquake, if so, you might be surprised to learn that in 1886, the Great Charleston Earthquake with an magnitude of 6.9 to 7.3 became the most destructive earthquake to strike the east coast to this day.  At least sixty persons were killed in this massive quake that could be felt from Boston to as far south as Cuba.
